Edmund founded Tax Architecture Group (TAG) in 2017, as a tax advisory and consulting firm with a focus on the development of innovative tax structures and products for high-net worth individuals and businesses in all sectors. Edmund and the TAG team take a collaborative approach to the development and implementation of these strategies and products working with and drawing on the experience of accounting, legal and financial advisory firms to ensure these cutting-edge strategies products are not only a value add from a tax perspective but also from a commercial, financial and compliance perspective.
When working directly with clients, Edmund acts in a similarly collaborative role consulting with the clients’ legal, accounting, banking, financial and insurance advisors to provide an overall strategy, including tax, that best fits the clients’ and their businesses’ financial needs and objectives.
Prior to founding Tax Architecture Group, Edmund practiced as a tax advisor for over 20 years, as a tax partner at two highly respected national law firms and as a partner in the Mergers and Acquisitions group of one of the “Big Four” accounting firms. Edmund has worked on a wide variety of transactions for a wide variety of clients that include multinationals, senior, intermediate and junior oil and gas companies, income and royalty trusts, private equity and pension funds, private companies and high net worth individuals. Edmund’s experience includes acting as lead tax counsel or co-counsel on some of the most high-profile transactions in western Canada including the $43 Billion merger of Petro Canada and Suncor, the acquisition of Phoenix Coyotes and the $15 Billion merger of Penn West and Canetic royalty trusts.
Edmund sits on the board of directors of a number of private companies including the corporate trustee of a private investment trust with a nine-figure investment portfolio, and a financial advisory firm with a mandate to work with Indigenous businesses and communities to develop their financial expertise and knowledge. He is also a small business owner and entrepreneur. He has been involved in the truck and car wash industry for over 10 years and currently owns three truck and car wash businesses.

Kurtis joined Tax Architecture Group in February, 2021. Prior to joining Tax Architecture Group, Kurtis spent several years as head of Canadian tax at a multinational corporation in the natural resources sector and was responsible for all Canadian tax matters of the company. During his tenure he oversaw A&D activities totaling more than $17 Billion, managed all tax aspects of the company’s Canadian corporate structure (including financing and repatriation) and the successful resolution of a number of significant tax disputes.
While practicing in-house, Kurtis was also an active member of the Tax Executives Institute (TEI) where he developed a strong network of industry and government connections. As a member of TEI’s Canadian Income Tax Committee since 2012, and serving as the Committee’s Chair in 2019-2021, he regularly met with senior officials at the Canada Revenue Agency and Department of Finance to discuss matters of importance to taxpayers and potential future policy initiatives.
Prior to practicing in-house, he practiced in Calgary, Alberta as a tax partner at McCarthy Tétrault and a tax associate at Blakes.
Kurtis also currently acts as Counsel in the Tax Group at Cassels where he consults to the firm’s partners on complex tax matters while adding commercial and industry insight.
